Veteran Makes Voice Heard By Congressman For Change

PALM DESERT, Ca. -

The Cal State-San Bernardino campus in Palm Desert is dedicated to helping local veterans with a new kind of university. 

When Gabriel Razcoadurazo, a veteran of the armed forces, was on his way to Veterans University he ran into Congressman Raul Ruiz. 

"I was late and I got to run into him and I told him a lot of veterans, we lose hope," says Razcoadurazo. "And we fall into cycles of suicide and depression and it becomes difficult to find someone or even accept any kind of help. So when we find someone who'll help us it helps us a lot more than we thought it would."

Razcoadurazo moved to the Coachella Valley thanks to a housing program for veterans. "I was awarded a house through Operation Homefront about 2 years ago... this program kind of gave me hope. I was able to move out here and provide my family with a better livelihood."

Congressman Ruiz says he's hoping to make more of these veteran programs accessible to those who serve our nation. 

"So this is just a partnership coming together to educate, train our local veterans and their family members and anybody who works with veterans to better serve our veterans. Our collective vision is to make this district the most veteran friendly community in the nation," stated Rep. Ruiz.

"I believe it's only going to continue to grow, to get better," Rep. Ruiz says. "And the point here is that the veterans must come first and be the center of all of our efforts."

Miss Veteran America Contestant Battles Vet Homelessness

Veteran Sally Rejas, a semifinalist in The Miss Veteran America competition, is using the platform to help drive awareness to veteran homelessness and encourage more involvement in finding solutions to housing our heroes. The competition showcases the strength of military women, and supports Final Salute (nonprofit with veteran homeless shelter H.O.M.E. program).

Whether Sally wins the competition or not, she is determined to help Final Salute win the war on veteran homelessness.

Dentists Donate Dental Care to Veterans in Oregon

The Caring Hands organization has volunteered dentists to help assist brave veterans in Oregon. Kori Shellard, one of the veterans who had work done, had two kids and no money for dental. After avoid being in pictures because of the embarrassment of her chipped tooth, she was able to get the dental care that she needed. Kori commented on her gratitude saying, "I can't even express it. Dental work, you have no idea how expensive it is."

In Roseburg, Oregon the dentists were able to help 3o veterans with dental work from a semi-truck parked outside of Turning Point Adventist Church. Our thanks and appreciation go out to Caring Hands for looking out for our brave veterans of the armed forces.

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

After fighting in Vietnam, many of our brave veteran soldiers returning home received a harsh homecoming. Our heroes endured this treatment after giving up everything to fight for our country. Now, in order to honor Vietnam vets, most states now celebrate Vietnam Veterans Day.

March 26 in Tampa, Fl at Veterans Memorial Park, our veterans got a welcome home event that allowed Vietnam vets air their disappointment in how their return was welcomed by protesters. Now, they can finally get the honor that they deserved so many years ago.

Many gathered to hear accounts of the hell that our soldiers endured. Some spoke on how if people disagreed with the war not the soldiers fault (although they received the blunt of the attack).

The welcome home event may vary from year to year. So, check your calendars and make sure next year you give thanks to our veterans of the armed forces. If any Vietnam vets are reading this now, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
